In any hydroponic operation, the quality of the water used is of upmost importance. Dirty or unclean water is a breeding ground for bacteria, and common tap water is often chock full of harmful chemicals like chlorine. GTA Hydroponics offers a range of water purification systems to keep waste water at a minimum and ensure clean water for your plants.
Hard Vs. Soft Water
The amount of pollutants and other substances in your water is measured in parts per million. Hard water has a lot of minerals, and usually results in buildup on shower heads and taps. Substances like calcium and magnesium, which are found in abundance in hard water, can harm your plants.
In order to test out your water, consider purchasing a PPM meter. Water that is 200-300 PPM is good for your plants, while anything higher could lead to problems. Diluting hard water with distilled or reverse osmosis water is a good way to reduce the PPM.
Types of Purification Systems
One of the most effective water purification systems is the reverse osmosis system. A three-stage process, the filtration is very through and reliable. Due to the time-consuming nature of the filtration, the reverse osmosis system is usually slower than other filtration methods.
The single stage carbon water purification system is one of the cheapest on the market today, and has no waste water as a residual. However, the filtration is not as thorough as reverse osmosis, which could put your plants at risk.
It is possible to break down chlorine in water by leaving it in the sun for 24 hours, but most water contains many more chemicals which require the use of a dedicated filter to remove.
